Robert Townsend

Robert L. “Papaw” Townsend, 69, of County Home Road, Conover, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2005 after a lengthy illness at Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba Valley, with his family at his side. Born in Catawba County April 13, 1936, the son of the late Monroe and Fannie Leona Townsend, he resided in Conover with his wife of 50 years, Barbara Sipe Townsend. He attended Hickory High School and retired from Sigmon Paving. Robert was a child of God at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He was a loving husband, father, brother, pa-paw and uncle of many. His personality impacted all who knew him and his legacy will never end. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, and daughter-in-law, Tim L. and Sandy Townsend of Hickory, a daughter and son-in-law, Amanda LeaAnne and Robert Wilson of Hickory and a step-son, Bill Beddington of Hickory, four sisters, Margie Townsend, Clara Townsend, both of Hickory, Jennie Townsend and Ruth Little, both of Conover, three brothers, Raymond Townsend and Edward Townsend, both of Hickory and Truman Townsend of Rocky Mount, NC, four grandchildren, Michael “Andy” Walls, Jr., Tya Amanda Walls, Christina Alias Walls and Matthew Vernon Townsend and an adopted granddaughter, Jasmine Colby and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Dean Townsend, Max Townsend, Glenn Townsend, Dockery Townsend, Ellis Townsend, and Mark Townsend, three sisters, Thelma Townsend Sigmon, Vertie Townsend Hedrick and Brenda Townsend Young. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Pastor Robert J. Stevens will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the church located at 2160 35th Av. Dr, NE, in Hickory. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658. The family will be gathering after the ceremony at the home of the daughter, Amanda Wilson, 3561 Springs Road, NE Hickory, NC 828-455-0157 or 828-228-1659.
