Thomas Wayne ?Tommy? Bumgarner, 68 of Conover died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice after a long battle with cancer. Born March 19, 1944 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Marvin Eugene and Johnsie Keota Raby Bumgarner. Tommy served in the U.S Army in Germany during the Vietnam era and worked all his adult life as a truck driver. He had a great love for God, his family and for America. He was member of the American Legion Post 16. In addition to his wife of 46 years, Matilda Jane Berryhill Bumgarner of the home; two sons, Patrick Wayne Bumgarner of Newton and Cliff Thomas Bumgarner and wife Jamie of Claremont; two sisters, Ora Lee Milligan of Harrisburg, NC and Betty Asherbraner and husband J.D. of Hickory; three brothers, Gene Bumgarner and wife Sue of Hickory, Carroll Ray Bumgarner and wife Palma Jane of Granite Falls and John Bumgarner and wife Kay of Hickory; two grand-children, the apple of his eye, Riley and Reece; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins survive him. In addition to his parents, a brother, Marvin Lewis; and a sister, Doris Shull preceded him in death. The funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Eric Hollar will officiate. Burial will follow in Conover Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 4-6:30pm Saturday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Cliff Bumgarner, Charlie Bentley, Allen Bumgarner, David Asherbraner, Curtis Bumgarner, Gaither Bumgarner, Steve Berry and Billy Milligan.
