Walter Smith

Walter Paul Smith, 85 of Conover died Tuesday April 1, 2008 at Abernathy Laurels. Born August 6, 1922 in Lincoln County he was the son of the late Jacob Andrew Smith and Elizabeth Keever Smith. He was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ where he was an Elder, a former member of the consistory, a member of the Life Enrichment Center Building Committee and a member of the Brotherhood. He was US Army Veteran serving during WW II. He was 1940 graduate of Startown High School and a member of Conover Lions Club. Paul was Jacksonâ??Buffâ??s first employee and retired from there after 26 years of service. For 10 years he was a funeral assistant. His wife of 58 wonderful years, Faye White Smith preceded him in death in 2005. Two brothers, Aubrey and Jesse Smith, and a sister, Margaret Jones also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Smith Michael and husband Dave of Claremont, a son, David Smith and wife Jennifer of Graham, NC, a sister, Nettie Reep of Lincolnton and four grandchildren, Brian Smith, Jessica Smith Bigelow and husband John, Sara Smith, and Melanie McLendon and husband Charles. A Celebration of Paulâ??s life will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday April 4, 2008 at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover. Rev. James Humphrey and Rev. Peggy Stout will officiate. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with Military graveside rites provided by American Legion Post 48. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to Trinity Reformed UCC 217 NE 2nd Av Conover, NC 28613 or to Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658 or to Abernathy Laurels 102 Leonard Av Newton, NC 28658.
