Walter Linley “Lynn” Stancil was born August 29, 1950, in Raleigh, NC. He passed away at his home in Stony Point, NC, on February 18, 2023, following a period of declining health.
Lynn grew up in Garner, NC, and graduated from Garner Senior High School and Wake Technical Community College. He then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps.
Lynn developed a love of horses at a very young age, and enjoyed time spent participating in rodeos around the Southeast. In 1984, he found himself in the emerging cellular telephone industry, as a cell site technician and then as a site development specialist. Altogether he spent 33 years in the industry. Susan joined the industry a year later. In June of 1986, he was working in Fayetteville, NC when the Susan showed up in her pick-up with fried chicken and beer for the crew. His interest sparked, and after learning that they both loved horses, the rest was history. Susan and Lynn were married in 1991. He retired in 2017 from Stancil Site Development, the company that he and Susan started together in 2004. They spent many afternoons and weekends trail riding with family and friends. One of his favorite quotes, by Ronald Reagan was, “There is nothing better for the insides of a man than the outside of a horse.” His love of animals also extended to the many dogs and cats that found themselves a lifelong home with the Stancils.
Lynn, along with Susan, was well known for entertaining friends on their patio at their farm. Lynn was especially well known for his pig cooking skills, as well as his family barbeque sauce recipe. He is especially remembered for his fun-loving, welcoming spirit and his genuine smile.
Lynn is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan Bumbarger Stancil. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Evelyn Stancil, his sister, Peggy Stancil Bagwell, and his brother, Joseph Donald Stancil. He is survived by his sisters, Joan Stancil Potter, and Anne Stancil Byrd, along with his sister-in law Judy Mason Stancil, his sister-in-law Judy Bumbarger Allen, and his brother-in-law Jack Allen.
