Wellington Moyer
July 18, 1922 — October 10, 2018
Wellington Landis Moyer 96 of Hickory died Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born July 18th, 1922 he was the son of the late Nelson Moyer and Emma Landis Moyer.
Welly grew up on a farm in Montgomery County, PA. He assisted in mission church planting in eastern PA before moving to Catawba County NC in 1953 to assist in a church planting endeavor. He served twenty years as a pastor at Mountain View Mennonite Church, and as Chaplin at CVMC 36 years. He also served as a coordinator for Mennonite Disaster Service working on various recovery projects throughout the eastern US. He was a bi-vocational pastor and made his living as a heating oil deliveryman. He retired from Bumgarner Oil Company in the late 80's. In his retirement he did custom lawn care. He had a servant's heart and was ready and willing to help anyone in need.
His brother Nelson Moyer of PA; four daughters, Kathleen Hartzler (David) of Vale NC, Joanne Hunsberger (Roy) of Asheville NC, Joyce Hostetter, (Chuck) of Hickory NC, Jeannie Smith (Steve) of Dayton, VA, ; three sons, Vernon Moyer (Sandy) of Long View NC, Galen Moyer (Perry) of Charleston SC, and Ken Moyer (Barbara) of Mountain View, NC; a daughter-in-law, Miriam Moyer of Hindman, KY; 25 grandchildren, 86 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren survives him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Evangeline Rush Moyer. A son, David Moyer, also preceded him in death.
The funeral will be 2:00 PM Sunday October 14, 2018 at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mountain View Mennonite Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 PM Saturday October 13, 2018 at Mountain View Mennonite Church.
