Wilfred Long

April 15, 1944 — February 15, 2019

Wilfred (Will) Lee Long, age 74, of Conover, N.C. passed away, Friday, February 15, 2019. Will was born on April 15, 1944 in Caldwell County, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years Linda Long, by his father Wilfred Houston Long, his mother Lola Triplett Long Whitaker, his stepfather William Whitaker, his brother Coy Long, his grandson Eric Newell and his step daughter Alisa Taylor Swanson. He is survived by his wife Carol Long, daughter Wendy Long Thomas, his blended family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a brother Phillip Whitaker.

Will had a lifelong love of music that was fostered early on by his mom. Throughout his life, he was a member of several musical groups. Singing in gospel groups and traveling to churches throughout the region was one of his greatest joys. His gospel group, The Carolina Family, was a calling and invited others to rejoice and give testimony.

Even greater than Will’s love for music was his love and generosity for his family. Through his unique gift of showing his unconditional love, his blended family merged into his own family in their hearts and certainly within his heart as well. He was always there to lend a helping hand or just be a sympathetic ear. The last year of his life was spent enjoying time with his new wife Carol. Evidence of Will’s loving nature was summarized so well by Carol saying, “It was the best year of my life.”

Will was an avid golfer and he enjoyed playing with his many friends. He introduced the game to his late stepfather and grandchildren. We know Will, William, and Eric are all playing together on a heavenly golf course now.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Eric Marrotte, Dr. Stacey Wolfe and the entire ICU Neuroscience team at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The straightforward but yet compassionate approach was greatly appreciated.

Will Long’s memory and smile will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever. Family, friends and loved ones may join us in a remembrance ceremony at Jenkins Funeral Home on Startown Road on February 23, 2019. The receiving will be at 1:00 pm and the service will be at 2:00 pm.
