William â??Billâ? Wayne Smith, Sr., 72 of Nottingham Drive, Newton died Monday, September 28, 2009 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born November 9, 1936 in Buncombe County, N.C., he was the son of the late William Alton & Janie Sue Elizabeth Capps Smith. He was the charter President of Startown Optimist Club where he was very involved in youth athletics. He was one of the founders of the Big Red Ball Field in Newton. He was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years & was a sales representative for Dow Chemical Company. His wife of 53 years, Sherrard Anne Jacobs Smith of the home; two sons, William (Bill) Wayne Smith, Jr. & wife Sherry of Lenoir, NC, Joel Dwayne Smith of Startown; Special nieces, Shannon Marie & husband Neel Dennie of Newton, Sherrard Anne Pearce of Mooresville, NC; Sister in law, Mary Katherine Lewis & husband David of Newton; a great niece; four great nephews; a God daughter, Edyth (Edie) Taylor & husband, Mike Ellis; Five grand-children, Jacob (Jake) Stevenson Smith, Lucas (Luke) Drake Ervin, Justin Charles Keever, Whitney Lynn Keever, Austin Dwayne Caldwell; one great grand-daughter, Hailey Grace Keever; and a daughter of his heart, Linda Fowler of Kissimmee, Florida survive him. A grandson; William (Trey) Wayne Smith III preceded him in death. A Celebration of Billâ??s life will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009 at St. Paulâ??s Reformed Church. The Rev., Dr. Steve Disher will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at St. Paulâ??s Memorial Park on Hwy. 10, Newton. Pallbearers will be; Paul Curtis, Don Curtis, Jake Smith, Luke Ervin, Neel Dennie & Steven Dennie. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Tom Punch, Roy Lail, John Taylor, Jerry Deal, Ken Bolick & David L.
